Finding the right kind of exercise and committing to a regular routine contributes to an increased metabolism.
Many people fight the never-ending battle of weight loss. It is a difficult challenge, and it is often met with failure. Unfortunately, failure often leads to emotional eating which contributes to weight gain. It can be a vicious cycle. Those wishing to lose weight often restrict their diets to exclude certain foods and greatly reduce caloric intake. This kind of diet does not work for most, especially when one's favorite food is right in front of him or her. Weight loss does not have to be about calorie restriction. The first step to weight loss is exercise. With exercise, one builds physical fitness, increases cardiovascular health, and speeds up the metabolism. An increased metabolism allows one to eat a balanced diet that includes some sinfully delicious foods. Find the Right ExerciseMany gym memberships are bought with good intentions, but many of them are hardly used. While aerobics classes and weight training are traditional types of exercise used in the battle of the bulge, many people find them boring and cannot continue an exercise regimen beyond one or two weeks. While some people may swear by aerobics and weight training, others need to get outside of the gym. Some people live for running. Others like horseback riding, tennis, or simply walking. Some are driven by the adrenaline rush of mountain biking. Whatever it may be, finding the right type of exercise is the key to maintaining a regular exercise routine. Exercise should be fun, so it is necessary to try several different kinds. Make a CommitmentFor some, it is easy to mark down exercise days on a calendar and to follow a rigid schedule. Those who participate in outdoor activities may choose to make a rule of getting outside every day that there is a sunny opportunity. Different personalities need to follow different rules. The important thing is to make a commitment to exercise several times per week. Easy days should alternate with high-intensity days. Cross training by doing different activities or changing the environment by going to different parks can keep things interesting. Start SlowlyStarting an new exercise program can be exciting and can cause one to jump in with full force; however, it is important to start slowly to prevent burnout. Committing to 20 minutes per day makes it much easier to incorporate exercise into a daily schedule. Over time, fitness and the desire to exercise increase, and greater time commitments become more realistic. Regular exercise greatly contributes to the body's ability to burn calories and decrease fat. Finding the right activity and making a commitment to regular exercise will make this process easier. Social groups exist for many sports. For example, many areas have bicycling groups that welcome cyclists of all fitness levels. These groups provide the motivation and support necessary for making a commitment to exercise. Related ArticlesWebMD: Exercise and Weight Loss
