Teenagers face unique challenges regarding weight loss. Their bodies are changing. They are in the midst of intense peer pressure. Many suffer from low self-esteem, and more than a few teens have been driven to depression or desperation in their quest to lose weight and look better. Teens and their families should also openly discuss any concerns with the doctor, including emotional pressures, stress, drug problems (if applicable), teen anorexia, etc. Safe Ways for Teens to Lose WeightKeeping in mind that a health care professional's input is critical, here are five sure and safe ways teens can begin to lose weight: Say No to Drugs, Smoking, and Alcohol Not only is it illegal for teens to smoke, drink, and do drugs, it's also unhealthy. Teenagers experience a lot of mental and physical changes, and it's not healthy to throw drugs, alcohol, and tobacco into the mix. Their bodies don't need those things. This includes steroids. Drink Plenty of Water - and Go Easy on the Soda Teens looking to lose weight should increase their water intake and lay off the soda. The more soda a teen drinks, the more calories he or she puts on. And don't think the diet sodas are the answer. Recent studies have shown that diet soda drinking doesn't correlate with weight loss. Drink water to lose weight. Keep Junk Food to a Minimum Want to lose weight? Cut back on the McDonald's french fries and Dairy Queen Blizzards. Junk food (candy, chips, ice cream, etc.) tastes good, but it's not good for you. Try eating healthier snacks. Save the junk food for special treats. Walk (or Run) Teens should walk every day. It's a great stress relief and burns calories. If the doctor okays it, running is also a great calorie-burner. Try to walk at least 30 minutes a day. Build Up Those Muscles! Muscles burn calories when they work. In fact, they even burn calories when they rest. With this in mind, teenagers can start losing weight (at least the unhealthy "fat" weight) by increasing muscle mass. Lose Weight the Healthy WaySteer clear of "magic pills" and crash diets. Teens who really want to lose weight should make the lifestyle change. Living healthier will result in weight loss. By saying no to destructive substances and yes to eating right and exercise, teens will feel better about themselves and will experience true weight loss.
