When it comes to weight loss, fad diets do not provide long term results, but some simple lifestyle changes can get a body healthy and lean.

The human body is a finely tuned machine, and in order to expect it to run its best, it needs to be given proper fuel. Putting the wrong foods into the human body is like filling the gas tank of a car with regular fuel instead of premium unleaded gas. The car will still run, but not as well as it should.

When we begin a weight loss diet and actually stick to it, some excess weight is sure to disappear. But over time, the body will become used to being fed only low fat, low calorie foods and eventually become unable to burn the amount of calories necessary to lose more than a few pounds. Providing the body with healthy, high octane foods ensures optimum performance.

Stick to Healthy Foods

Becoming familiar with the food pyramid, is an important step in the quest for shedding unwanted body fat. The pyramid provides suggested daily intake as well as portion sizes for each food group.

  • Try to include dairy products, whole grains, lean proteins and fresh fruits and vegetables into daily meals.
  • Add extra flavor to foods while they are cooking instead of on the plate. Infusing foods with herbs and spices while they are cooking will eliminate the need for sugary, fatty sauces and dips at the table.
  • Always plan meals in advance. If the ingredients for a low fat stir fry are already cut up and ready to cook at the end of the day, there will be less temptation to stop and pick up fatty take-out on the way home.
  • Be sure to stock up on a variety of dried and canned legumes such as chick peas, black beans and lentils. On their own, legumes are an excellent source of dietary fiber, but when combined with whole grains, they are also a complete protein.
  • Eat several small meals throughout the day rather than three regularly portioned meals. Eating smaller portions more often keeps the body satisfied so that the dieter will not be inclined to reach for high fat snacks to curb hunger.

Set Realistic Goals

If the goals that one sets out to accomplish are unrealistic, they will be impossible to reach and that can lead to many disappointments along the way. It is unreasonable for someone who stands 5 feet tall to flip through the pages of Vogue and expect that she will look just like the women in the magazine once the weight has been lost. No amount of weight loss can make a person taller or change the shape of a body.

Instead set smaller goals that are within reach. Dig out an old favorite pair of blue jeans that you haven`t been able to wear for years and make it a first goal to be able to get back into them.

Get Plenty of Exercise

A good diet is not enough by itself, and although a healthy body needs exercise in order to work its best, it is also important to set realistic goals when starting a new exercise routine. If a body is overweight and out of shape, it is unreasonable to expect that that body will be able to jog three miles or do an entire hour of weight training the first day.

  • Find the exercises that you enjoy doing and stick to them. Pushing to do exercises that are not enjoyable can lead to giving up an exercise regime altogether.
  • If a home work out is preferred, do not rush out to buy expensive home work out machines. Instead buy a trial membership at a local gym and try all of the machines to see which are best suited to your routine and abilities.

Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind when trying to lose weight, is that it is a very much a personal endeavor. Trying to lose weight to look good for someone else will almost always lead to disappointment. It is nearly impossible to reach the goals set out for use by someone else, and failure to do so could lead to feelings of inadequacy or resentment towards the other person.
