Lose Belly Fat with Abdominoplasty

The Tummy Tuck Procedure that Flattens the Abs

Dec 16, 2009 Jennifer Marsh

Abdominoplasty is a procedure that removes the fat from the abs. Patients looking at a tummy tuck can expect certain results.

Whether it’s during the holidays or the summer, belly fat can creep up on people. Belly fat affects men and women, and it can make clothes feel tight and ruin body image. Abdominoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure that removes the excess fat from the upper and lower stomach area. Abdominoplasty is also known as a "tummy tuck."

Expectations for Belly Fat and a Tummy Tuck

People who have a hard time getting rid of the belly fat in the upper, lower and side area (the obliques) can benefit from abdominoplasty surgery. For people with only a small amount of belly fat, simple liposuction surgery procedures may be sufficient to flatten the stomach. However, abdominoplasty surgery removes belly fat and helps flatten the stomach, so it’s often preferred by patients who want to contour the shape of the abdominals.

Types of Abdominoplasty Surgery

There are two main types of tummy tuck surgery options for the patient. The choice made by the patient is determined by how much belly fat and flattening of the stomach is required.

A complete abdominoplasty surgery is the longest and most invasive. This tummy tuck procedure can last up to five hours. An incision is made from one hip to the other. The fat is lifted and cut off the body. The remaining attached skin on the body is sewn together. This flattens the stomach and removes large portions of belly fat from the patient.

A partial abdominoplasty surgery takes only a couple of hours. This tummy tuck procedure can be done in an outpatient facility, and the patient is released only a few hours after the procedure. A partial abdominoplasty removes less belly fat, and the navel is not removed. The doctor also cuts smaller incisions. Stitches are placed over small incisions and covered with bandages.

Abdominoplasty Surgery and the Risks

Although tummy tuck surgery is elective, it still comes with risks. According to the University of Rochester Medical Center, the risks include infection, excessive fluid loss and blood clots. Patients can also have severe allergic reactions to the anesthesia, which is a life threatening condition. For this reason, it’s important to disclose all food allergies and pre-existing conditions to the plastic surgeon and the anesthesiologist. For some patients, dissatisfaction with the results leads to more surgery in the future.

Patients who want to shape the stomach area can benefit from abdominoplasty surgery. The decision to get a tummy tuck is an important one, because it can affect health and finances. All patients who elect to have plastic surgery to study the process and do background checks on the surgeon to ensure the best care is taken by a licensed practitioner.
