Specialized Exercise Programs Take Valley by Storm

Who wouldn't want to take off 10 pounds of fat and put on eight pounds of muscle in the course of just five weeks?

No, it’s not a fantasy; it’s the average result from participants in the Metabolic Makeover program offered by Qi Bio Systems in Phoenix.

The Metabolic Makeover program, developed by Dr. Ben Bocchicchio, the founder of the 1970s slow resistance training movement, runs for five weeks with two, one-hour sessions per week. In a published scientific study of the program it was shown to reduce body fat, increase muscle mass, increase cardio endurance, decrease blood pressure and resting heart rate and increase resting metabolic rate.

Surprisingly, exercise only takes up about 15 minutes of each session. The full-body workout entails a seated leg press, inclined hamstring curl, inclined pull-up, fly, declined shoulder press, bicep curl and a pull over. All of the exercises are done as slow as possible using high weights and going to failure, which often occurs after five or six reps.

After working out, participants enjoy a vascular massage. The massage uses a medical device used by cardiologists to improve cardiovascular strength and conditioning in heart patients. Reclining on a table, cuffs similar to blood pressure cuffs are strapped around the legs and abdomen. The person is also hooked up to a heart rate monitor. The massage is designed to increase the rate that blood is returned to the heart. This causes a chemical response that simulates nitric oxide, which is associated with healing and anti-aging. The massage also helps rid the body of lactic acid built up during the workout.

Improve your golf game

Golfers are always looking for ways to improve their golf game. Athletes know that the secret isn’t the latest, greatest club, but rather it’s to become a fitter golfer. The Westin Kierland in Scottsdale is ready to help.

The Westin Kierland features an exclusive, innovative exercise program designed for golfers called the Fore-Max golf training system. Fore-Max was created by the Westin’s own trainer Steve Heller to improve handicap and increase fitness in the process.

The 90-minute class focuses on flexibility, strength and power and aerobic conditioning. Improved flexibility means greater rotational abilities while strength training concentrates on developing the specific muscles used in the golf swing and in creating core strength and stability. Cardio is often overlooked in golf training, but greater aerobic capacity means an increased ability to stay on the course for hours.

Golf Week has called the program “a great golf specific workout that truly has the traveling golfer in mind.” However both travelers and locals take advantage of the unique workout. Additionally, several PGA, LPGA and collegiate golfers can often be found in the class.

The golf training sounds amazing. I really keys into the specifics required for a great swing and endurance. It sounds like it's not only addressing your strengh but your flexibiliy. Both are critical for a great swing.
