The Weight Watchers diet program, which began in the 1960s, allows participants to eat their favorite foods, while it teaches them healthy food choices.
According to WebMD, the longevity of the Weight Watchers diet stems from a record of effectiveness, a community which holds one accountable, and the diet's ability to adapt, in order to meet the needs and demands of a fast-paced generation and its way of life. The Point SystemThe point system has been the main focus of the plan for several years. Each food is allocated a certain number of points, based on the amount of fiber, fat and calories it contains. The number of points each program member is allowed to eat each day, is determined by his or her weight, height, age, activity level and gender. While on the diet, one must stay within the confines of the number of allotted points, while choosing food for each meal and snack. MomentumThe latest Weight Watcher's flexible eating plan is called Momentum. Momentum teaches the participants how to choose foods that will help keep them full for a longer period of time, and shows them ways to avoid temptation. Food ChoicesAll foods are allowed in moderation, but the program member is encouraged to choose foods which contain large amounts of fiber, lean protein, water and air. Filling foods are labeled with a green diamond. A Weight Watchers' example reveals that a plate of four ravioli, made with white flour noodles, and topped with Marinara sauce, equals ten points. A healthier and larger portioned choice, for the same ten points, is a whole wheat pasta dish, which contains shrimp, broccoli, tomatoes and Marinara sauce. The list of foods, their point values and their green diamond ratings, are distributed to participants online and at the weekly meetings. Members are also taught how to figure the number of points in processed foods, based on the nutritional information which is located on the packaging. The Weight Watchers' label also provides meals, snacks, ice cream, snack bars and various other diet foods, which are available for purchase. Weight Loss StrategiesThe diet is designed around a community of people who are all striving to lose unwanted pounds. Community is achieved by attending weekly meetings, or through the Weight Watchers' online site, which includes forums, advice, recipes, restaurant guides, meal plans and workout programs. Exercise is a vital component to the diet's success. Different fitness activities are given point values, and plan members are encouraged to earn 2-4 points daily. The suggested workout sessions range from 45 minutes to an hour and a half. Program CostsA monthly meeting pass can be purchased for just under $40. Individual weekly meeting costs range from $13-$15. The online weekly fee is $5.
